Groundwater recharge this year maximum since 2004; Punjab, Rajasthan & Haryana extract more than recharged
India's groundwater recharge reached its highest level since 2004, totaling 449 billion cubic metres (BCM) this year, with an increase of 11.5 BCM compared to 2022. Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana remain areas of concern due to excessive groundwater extraction, surpassing recharge rates. Delhi ranks fourth with nearly 100% water extraction. The report 'Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India 2023' reveals that 87% of annual groundwater extraction is for agriculture, while domestic use accounts for 11%, and industrial purposes account for 2%. Groundwater management has improved in 226 assessment units, resulting in more areas classified as safe zones.
